Coloured Shortbread for Kids

Coloured Shortbread for Kids

Ingredients

  • 100g butter
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 1 ½ cup of flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder

Method

First cream butter and sugar together, using a food processor or a strong arm.

Meanwhile, separate the egg and set aside the yolk. Mix the egg white and vanilla essence into the butter mixture.

Sift in the flour and baking powder and mix to form a dough. Place the dough in the fridge for 5 minutes to chill, then roll out to 5mm thick on a floured surface.

Using either cookie cutters or a glass, cut different shapes and rounds from dough and transfer onto a lined baking tray. If the dough is difficult to handle, use a fish slice dusted with flour to transfer the biscuits easily.

Stir the egg yolk that you separated earlier with a fork then divide into small bowls. Stir a few drops of food colouring into each bowl and use it to paint the tops of the biscuits with the coloured yolk, choosing to decorate however you like.

Bake at 170°C for 5-10 minutes, or until brown around the edge. Transfer to a cooling rack and then enjoy!
